How to make a line graph

  1. Paste a table from Excel or open an .xlsx, CSV or TSV file.
  2. Check the first rows and any excluded-value messages.
  3. Set axis titles and physical size, then save a project file or export the figure.

Data format

The first column is numeric X or dates written as YYYY-MM-DD. Each other column is a separate Y series. Missing Y cells break the line. Rows are drawn in ascending X order; repeated X values stay as separate observations.

For supplied error bars, enable the option and use one value/lower/upper column group per series after X. Lower and upper are absolute endpoints, not distances from the value. Missing or invalid bounds for a usable value block export. Name the meaning of the bounds in the editor and explain their source in your manuscript caption.

Axis limits are automatic when blank. Custom limits must include the observations and all supplied bounds; this prevents a manual range from silently hiding part of the data.

Save a project file to keep your source table and figure settings. Open it in this editor to revise the figure later. Choosing an example replaces your table and chart settings but keeps your size and style; Undo example brings your previous work back.

Frequently asked questions

What table format does the line graph need?

Put numeric values or ISO dates in the first column, and one Y series in each remaining column. The first row gives the column names.

What happens to missing values?

A missing Y value leaves a gap in that series. It is never treated as zero and the line is not connected across it.

How do I add error bars?

Enable “Use supplied lower and upper bounds” and put each series in three columns after X: value, lower bound, upper bound. Bounds must be finite and contain the value. Label what they represent, such as supplied SD bounds or a supplied 95% confidence interval. CleanFigure draws the supplied bounds; it does not calculate intervals or statistical tests.

Can I set the axis limits?

Yes. Leave each limit blank for automatic scaling, or enter a numeric limit; date X limits use YYYY-MM-DD. A manual range must contain all accepted points and supplied bounds. Invalid or reversed limits block export until corrected.
